Abstract

The specific objective of the SPS Project is to increase production and trade in agriculture and fisheries which meet international standards while protecting plant, animal and human health and the environment. The actions of the Project seek to improve the legislative framework, national and regional coordination and the capacity of private and public sectors to comply with the SPS Regime. During the past year, technical actions resulted in: (i) the initiation of the process of drafting/revision of four model bills which form the basis of a regionally harmonised, regional legislative framework for plant and animal health, food safety and fisheries; (ii) the strengthening of the three groups and the Regional Agency (CAHFSA), which seek to coordinate SPS matters in the Region and advance the prioritised programme of work for Agricultural Health and Food Safety (AHFS); (iii) a 50% increase in the representation of CARIFORUM countries at international AHFS meetings, (iv) capacity building of over 300 public and private sector stakeholders in key AHFS areas important for complying with the SPS regime.
